Sometimes it’s hard to buy gifts, either because you’re buying a gift for someone who has everything or because you don’t know the person well enough. Or sometimes you’re just plain out of ideas, in which case I offer you 5 unique places to buy gifts that you may not have tried before.

Forget shopping at the mall where it’s crowded and nutty! Perhaps I’m jaded by too many years working in retail management (cue the sad music) but I’ve discovered there are places to shop that are simply more interesting. When you’re really at a loss for what to buy for that special someone, it can help to browse in person or online—preferably without other people elbowing you in the stampede to get the best deals.
Unique Places to Buy Gifts
Wineries: we only make it to a few wineries each year, but most of them offer a selection of cute items. We’ve seen mustard and other cool condiments (we’re big condiment people), pretty glasses, wine accessories, T-shirts, aprons, and random decor with vineyard prints. If none of the items suit, you can still buy the wine and make it into a gift basket.
Museums: hopefully you have one close to you. Every museum I’ve been in has a broad selection of items such as books, dolls, calendars, and other local paraphernalia. Gifts from museums will work especially well for your loved ones who live in another town or state.
Cracker Barrel: I’ve bought so many gifts at their country store over the years that I’ve lost count. They have toys, dishes, clothing, games, and other novelty gifts. I’d be surprised if you went in to buy gifts for someone else and didn’t pick up a little something for yourself 😉
Zazzle: if inspiration strikes, you can create gifts through this online company that allows you to personalize mugs, T-shirts, posters, pictures, and more. This is a great way to make your loved ones feel even more special!
Antique Stores: now I’m not talking about a dirty, dusty junk shop where pretty things come to die. I’m talking about classy shops that keep treasures and often have an interesting story to go with their items. You never know what you’ll find until you dig in and start browsing.
Hopefully these ideas give you a place to start so you can steer clear of the mall! The important thing is to think carefully about:
- Who you’re buying for
- What your loved one enjoys
- How the gift will benefit their life
- If the gift will be long remembered and treasured
Remember, you can always put together a nice gift basket and include gift cards, a few personalized items, and a bottle of wine to make your loved ones feel special!
